Happy Birthday, Dad!

Okay, let me preface this post by saying THIS WAS NOT MY IDEA!!!

It's my dad's birthday.

I make cakes.

So my sister-in-law (thankyouverymuch, Courtney!) came up with this great idea... give him what he likes.

So I did.

I had decided not to post it, 'cause it's embarrassing and not my style, but Dad just, ahem, politely requested that his cake be on here as well.

You can scroll down if you really want to see it.

You're welcome, Dad. Love you!

Happy Birthday, Cullen!

Cullen turned one year old, so I had to make a cake for him.

We did a camouflage theme for his party.

I didn't go all out on it, since the day before the party I spent at a family reunion, four hours away.

Happy Birthday to my baby!

I thought kids were supposed to like cake?!?

Happy Thanksgiving!

My husband's work was having a party the day before Thanksgiving, so he asked me to make a cake. I considered making a cake that looked like a table full of food, ransacked, with spilled cups, food everywhere, a stained cloth, a turkey carcass on a platter, etc. I thought that would be fun, and relatively easy.

Until I opened my big mouth.

I jokingly said that it would be fun to make a cake that actually looks like a turkey.

Boy, he grabbed onto that idea fast!!!

Many hours later, here it is:

Hannah's Cake

A friend (my sister-in-law's sister-in-law) asked me to make a cake for her daughter's birthday. It was her first sleepover, so I decided to make a cake that looked like a little girl asleep in her sleeping bag. Here it is:

The little girls at the party all had to have some "popcorn" and a piece of the overnight bag with their slice of cake!

FBI National Academy cake

Okay, so today's my husband's birthday. Yes, it is after midnight on Friday morning. I have been up past midnight every night since last Friday working on his cake. I asked him what he wanted... I was thinking a simple birthday cake. Oh, no. He wanted me to bake a cake for him to take to the FBI National Academy luncheon the PD is hosting. Friday. Today. The day after he returns from a week-long absence. The day after I have to take care of two children alone for seven straight days.

What does he want it to look like, you ask? He wants me to make the seal of the FBI National Academy; he'll be attending it soon. Anyway, seals are pretty simple, right? I'm attaching the picture he gave me... before he left for a week-long conference in New Orleans.

Like I said, I've been up past midnight every night for seven straight nights. Here is the result of all my work...

That is 100% fondant. I am NO GOOD at piping, so I rolled fondant into tiny little strings, cut them to length, and placed them into position as letters.

I have to admit, it looks pretty good.

Or it did.

Before I threw it at him.

Pat's Cake

We had a birthday party for my stepmother.

She likes cats, so I thought I would make a ball of yarn with a cat on top. The ball of yarn was fine, but I had sooooo many problems with the black fondant! I had to add so much color, that the texture changed considerably.

I wanted him black because we used to have a cat like him named Hunter.

Still, I think it was okay.

But as a joke, I made another cake...

Believe it or not, this is the one everybody ate!

Except my Grampa. He wouldn't touch it!

Caylee's Cake

My niece turned three on September 21, and had a Tinkerbell party. My sister-in-law asked me to make her cake.

I did a two-tier, three-layer cake, covered in pink and purple fondant and stars.

I also sculpted my niece, dressed as Tinkerbell.

I made her wings out of melted Jolly Rancher candy.

I'm rather proud of it!

Ugly cake

Then, there was the ugly one!

I was trying something new, in anticipation of my niece's birthday. My sister-in-law had asked me to make her cake, and I wanted to attempt a slice of cake sitting on top of a cake missing one slice. It really would have been cute, but I was being lazy and didn't want to mix up multiple batches of fondant, much less color multiple batches, so I used what I had. I also had bought new leaf-shaped cutters I wanted to try out.

Prepare yourself; it's hideous!

Baby Cake

This was my first "commissioned" cake!

My sister-in-law's sister-in-law (I know, confusing) was hosting a baby shower, and needed a cake. My sister-in-law told her that I had made a couple of cute ones, and so she called me.

I decided to sculpt a baby, but my husband thought that was too ambitious. This was, after all, only my third fondant cake. Thank goodness I don't listen to him about artistic stuff!
I sat down at the kitchen counter, put on Ace of Cakes for inspiration, and set to work. A couple of hours later, I had finished her. She was so cute, I didn't want to give her up! I called my husband in to see, and he was amazed!!! As was I.

My first cake

Okay, I know it's not pretty, but it was my first one!!!

I wanted to see if my husband was right, and if I really could do this. I looked up a recipe for the fondant on the Internet, and got to work.

After the fondant "set" overnight, the colors doubled in intesity!!! The flavor was terrible! It was just too much, and tasted bitter! We had to pull off all the circles and balls to eat it.
